Stewart hires Grubb to lead No. 14 team
Tony Stewart’s crew chief for 2009 will be Hendrick Motorsports engineer Darian Grubb. A Friday morning press conference at Richmond International Raceway confirmed what had been widely speculated the past few weeks. Stewart Hass Racing is a satellite team for Hendrick Motorsports, so the company’s willingness to allow Grubb to join Stewart’s revamped operation makes sense.

This time last year after Richmond, Jimmie Johnson had locked a spot for the favorite to win the Cup title while Dale Jr was locked out. Dale Jr would finish the race 30th after blowing, yet, another DEI engine with only five laps to go, while fighting Tony Stewart for 2nd. This would make his fifth blown motor in six DNF’s. If the deal had gone through, Gordon would have had a four-year driving contract with GEM that would have paid him $3 million annually plus 45 percent of race winnings as well as insurance and other provisions customary for NASCAR driver agreements – a package likely worth at least $5 million annually. Gordon also could have had a spot on the team’s board of directors. GEM would have acquired Gordon’s shop and property in Charlotte.

So Silly Season has officially ended for David Stremme with the “surprise” announcement that he is taking over the Penske 12 car in 2009.
While Stremme has a few top five finishes in the Nationwide series, he has produced little in his Cup series career. Since he began racing in Cup in 2005, he has no wins, no poles, top fives and only three top ten finishes. He has led only 11 laps. His average start has been 26th and his average finish… also 26th.

I’ve been reading the news and the thoughts of other people the last couple weeks, forming my own opinions and wondering what would make a good piece for the MotorSportsNews.Net website. Nothing jumped out, so here’s some “bits and pieces”…
I’m sorry to see Dario Franchitti leave Nascar after one season, but I understand the desire to return to where he had success in the past. Here’s wishing him well and who knows? Maybe he’ll come back someday with another team.
